Description
Exterior
Painted bright orange, the McLaren 720S at hand is sure to turn heads wherever it shows up. But, then again, it would be the same in any other color, thanks to its stunning, shark-inspired design. With an aggressive front fascia, streamlined silhouette, and practical yet amusing butterfly doors, it’s impressive from any angle. This includes massive air scoops at the sides, a mesh-covered engine bay that glows when the ignition is on, and a rear spoiler that pops up while braking hard. And the braking is done with massive ceramic discs sitting behind the car’s black 19-inch wheels with Pirelli P Zero tires.
Still, this 2-seater doesn’t look as it does just for the show, as most of its body shapes are sculpted to improve aerodynamics and generate downforce. And as such, the McLaren 720S shows that the form and function can be joined in perfect harmony.
Interior
The McLaren’s interior, dressed up in Alcantara and carbon fiber, further reveals how track-orientated this car is. First is a pair of sporty seats shaped to hold the driver and passenger firmly strapped in through sharp corners. Then, there is a tri-spoked leather-covered steering wheel, which frames a digital instrument cluster. When in standard mode, it displays various engine and vehicle parameters, such as speed and engine temperature. But when the Track mode is engaged, the whole cluster tilts downwards, revealing a small display at its top, showing only the rev counter, speed, and the selected gear. Lastly, the center console is sparse yet functionally equipped with essential knobs and buttons, accompanied by a driver-orientated center touch-screen display.
Mechanics
Underneath the elegant and aerodynamically-shaped skin, the 720S has a carbon fiber monocoque chassis, which McLaren calls MonoCage. This F1-inspired structure is not only light, but it’s also extremely rigid, which reduces body flex under heavy cornering.
The heart of every super-sports car is the engine, which, in McLaren, is fitted just behind its seats. In factory trim, the twin-turbocharged V8 hiding there develops 720 horsepower, the number to which the car owes its name, and an astonishing 770 Nm of torque. The power is sent to the rear wheels through a snappy 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
And all that in a car that weighs just 1,400 kilograms is more than enough for superior handling and performance. In terms of numbers, that would translate to 0-60 acceleration in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 212 miles per hour. But this, however, is not an ordinary, factory-tuned McLaren 720S. Instead, its owner has fitted it with a Litchfield Custom Tune that ups the engine’s output to 800 horsepower.
