List of documents required to validate vehicle ownership and history

  • 1. The technical inspection certificate

    When you register your car in the EU, the competent authorities issue you a registration certificate. Depending on the rules in force in your country, this certificate consists of one or two parts.

    Other EU countries are obliged to recognize this certificate.

    the certificate of conformity

    The certificate of conformity, issued by the manufacturer, proves that the technical characteristics of the vehicle comply with environmental and safety standards.
    This can be a European (CE certificate) or national certificate.

  • Purchase contract or sales contract that details the condition of the car, including known defects. You can find a model of contract . It’s a good idea to look for cars that come with a comprehensive service book or service book ( Scheckheftgepflegt ).

  • Details of the most recent Technischer Überwachungsverein (TUV) inspection, if the vehicle is more than three years old

  • Owner’s passport or valid ID
  • The invoice, which contains the details of the car, the agreed price, the sales guarantee offered, as well as details of the car’s previous owners and sellers
  • A certificate proving that the car has undergone a technical inspection (autokeuring/controle technique) in the two months preceding the sale
  • A report on the condition of the car following the technical inspection
  • A certificate of conformity (gelijkvormigheidattest/certificate de conformity) which shows that the car meets the technical specifications defined by Belgian law
  • A Car-Pass indicating the number of kilometers traveled by the car
  • The pink form (roze formulier/formulaire rose) for car registration

Those who have papers issued before January 2014 can provide other documents:

  • Tenaamstellingsbewijs , or proof of ownership, which shows that the car is registered in the name of the owner, including the name, date of birth and residence of the owner, as well as the date of registration
  • Overschrijvingsbewijs , or “proof of transfer”, which is a registration certificate that demonstrates ownership of the car

  • Owner’s passport or valid ID
  • The transfer of ownership form 2 to be completed and signed
  • Vehicle Registration Papers: This will either be a DUA All-In-One Vehicle Document (Documento Único Automóvel) also known as License Plate Certificate (Certificado de Matrícula) , either two documents:
    • Vehicle Registration Document (Título de Registo de Propriedade)
    • Logbook on board
  • Proof of MOT: A valid IPO (Inspecção Periódica Obrigatória) test certificate
  • Green MOT card/certificate (Calendário das Inspecções Técnicas de Veículo, also called: Carta Inspecção Técnica Periódica) which details the inspection history of the vehicle and the date of the next inspection
  • Documents or Owner’s Municipal Vehicle Tax Contribution Card (Imposto Municipal de Veiculo) as proof of vehicle tax payment

  • In Switzerland, a vehicle is regularly subjected to a compulsory technical inspection at the invitation of the Motor Vehicle Department. For the majority of vehicles, cars and motorcycles, inspections are carried out at the following intervals: 1st inspection: 5 years after the date of first registration, 2nd inspection: 3 years after. Thereafter: every 2 years. A change of owner has no influence on these deadlines
  • The previous owner’s vehicle registration papers (traffic permit/Fahrzeugausweis) for a used car or the Expert report 13.20A/Pruefungsbericht 13. 20A if the vehicle is new or imported

  • The car’s V5C registration document (which will prove that you are the registered owner and that the car is yours)
  • MoT certificates (for cars older than three years, which will show all passes and notes of information on problems that may cause problems at future MoTs)
  • Service invoices (annual service receipts and a service book with major dealer stamps will be a bonus here)
  • A properly stamped service booklet
