Detta bilf\u00f6retag uppfann praktiskt taget den nyklassiska stilen och skapade bilar som s\u00e5g antika ut men som var mycket moderna och snabba. H\u00e4r \u00e4r historien om Excalibur Phaeton, en unik maskin som gav upphov till m\u00e5nga efterf\u00f6ljare.<\/p>\n<p>Historien om Excalibur kan inte ber\u00e4ttas utan att n\u00e4mna dess skapare &#8211; den ber\u00f6mda amerikanska fordons- och industridesignern Brooks Stevens. Stevens \u00e4r k\u00e4nd f\u00f6r m\u00e5nga framg\u00e5ngsrika bilkonstruktioner och var ett v\u00e4lk\u00e4nt namn inom bilindustrin p\u00e5 50-talet, d\u00e5 han arbetade f\u00f6r Studebaker, Jeep och senare Chrysler.  <strong>Han designade \u00e4ven t\u00e5g och motorcyklar och arbetade som konsult f\u00f6r m\u00e5nga f\u00f6retag.<\/strong>  Stevens \u00e4r en beg\u00e5vad stylist, men han har alltid haft en svaghet f\u00f6r klassiska bilar och har till och med grundat sitt eget bilmuseum flera decennier innan klassikerna tog \u00f6ver bilv\u00e4rlden. Han \u00e4lskade s\u00e4rskilt formerna fr\u00e5n sin barndom och ber\u00f6mde de europeiska lyx- och t\u00e4vlingsbilarna fr\u00e5n 20- och 30-talen. I slutet av 50-talet kom han p\u00e5 id\u00e9n att bygga ett eget bilf\u00f6retag och anv\u00e4nda de klassiska influenserna som grund f\u00f6r sin design. F\u00f6re honom var det ingen som ens t\u00e4nkte p\u00e5 att g\u00f6ra n\u00e5got liknande, eftersom f\u00f6rkrigsbilar ans\u00e5gs f\u00f6r\u00e5ldrade och f\u00f6rlegade p\u00e5 alla s\u00e4tt och vis, och k\u00f6parna var bara intresserade av moderna former, kromade fenor och stora motorer.<\/p>\n<p>Vid den tiden arbetade Stevens f\u00f6r Studebaker, ett av de mest framst\u00e5ende namnen i den amerikanska bilindustrins tidigaste dagar. N\u00e4r han blev ombedd att ta fram en konceptbil som skulle dra uppm\u00e4rksamheten till den krisande Studebaker, \u00f6vertalade han generaldirekt\u00f6ren att l\u00e5ta honom anv\u00e4nda Studebaker Lark-chassit och 290 hk V8-motorn f\u00f6r sin egen skapelse och visa upp den i Studebakers monter p\u00e5 1963 \u00e5rs bilutst\u00e4llning i Detroit.  <strong>Resultatet blev Excalibur SS, den f\u00f6rsta nyklassiska roadstern, n\u00e5got helt annorlunda \u00e4n vad resten av branschen gjorde.<\/strong>  Hans projekt fick genast stort intresse fr\u00e5n klassiska fans som ber\u00f6mde det innovativa tillv\u00e4gag\u00e5ngss\u00e4ttet, detaljrikedomen och den tidl\u00f6sa formen. Karossen var gjord av plast, men den kromade grillen, vindrutan, st\u00f6tf\u00e5ngarna och tr\u00e5dhjulen s\u00e5g ut som om de kom fr\u00e5n tidigt 1920-tal. Stevens \u00e4r fascinerad av klassiska former och anv\u00e4nde Mercedes SSK som en direkt inspiration och kopierade i princip dess linjer \u00f6ver Lark-ramen. Studebaker Lark-plattformen beh\u00f6lls och var tillg\u00e4nglig, men i st\u00e4llet f\u00f6r Studebaker V8 fick SS en ny Chevrolet 327 (5,3-liters) V8 fr\u00e5n Corvette med 300 hk. Med 300 hk fr\u00e5n Chevy V8, bakhjulsdrift och 4-v\u00e4xlad manuell v\u00e4xell\u00e5da (automatisk v\u00e4xell\u00e5da fanns senare) kunde SS n\u00e5 60 mph p\u00e5 cirka 6 sekunder och n\u00e5 en topp p\u00e5 130 mph. Den var till <strong>exempel lika snabb som Corvette, snabbare \u00e4n Jaguar E-Type och mer kapabel \u00e4n den samtida Porsche 911<\/strong>. Den visade sig vara mycket popul\u00e4r bland k\u00f6parna eftersom den hade mer utrymme, b\u00e4ttre hantering och mer komfort. <strong>\u00c5r 1970 introducerades bilarna i serie II, och bortsett fr\u00e5n n\u00e5gra mindre detaljer s\u00e5g Excalibur SS och Excalibur Phaeton n\u00e4stan lik<\/strong>adana ut. Den stora skillnaden \u00e4r att en st\u00f6rre Chevrolet 350 V8-motor med lite mer kraft och vridmoment har lagts till. F\u00f6r att klara av detta hade Serie II-bilarna standardskivbromsar runt om och en n\u00e5got l\u00e4ngre hjulbas. 70-talet ans\u00e5gs vara en m\u00f6rk tids\u00e5lder f\u00f6r amerikanska prestandamodeller, och 1975 introducerades serie III-bilar. De hade en enorm 454 V8 (7,4-liters) men bara 225 hk p\u00e5 grund av sk\u00e4rpta utsl\u00e4ppsnormer. Dessa bilar flyttade l\u00e5ngsamt \u00f6ver till lyxbilar och presterade annorlunda. Efterfr\u00e5gan b\u00f6rjade sakta avta och 1980, n\u00e4r modellerna i Serie IV introducerades, var det mycket f\u00e5 k\u00f6pare som fortfarande ville ha en nyklassisk roadster. F\u00f6retaget st\u00e4ngde sina d\u00f6rrar 1986, och det hj\u00e4lpte inte att Serie IV-modellerna hade en 5,0-liters V8 med bara 155 hk.  <strong>Trots att Stevens ans\u00f6kte om konkurs 1986 k\u00f6pte intresserade investerare r\u00e4ttigheterna till namnet och verktygen och startade om f\u00f6retaget 1987.<\/strong>  Tyv\u00e4rr m\u00f6tte de samma \u00f6de 1990, eftersom marknaden f\u00f6r s\u00e5dana bilar uppenbarligen hade f\u00f6rsvunnit.
