BMW 507 kan av allt att d\u00f6ma betraktas som ett misslyckande eftersom den inte lyckades leverera den framg\u00e5ng som f\u00f6retaget efterstr\u00e4vade.<strong>  Den s\u00e5ldes i mycket sm\u00e5 m\u00e4ngder, hade n\u00e4stan ingen framg\u00e5ng i t\u00e4vlingar och \u00f6vergavs efter bara n\u00e5gra \u00e5r p\u00e5 marknaden.<\/strong>  \u00c4r det ett misslyckande? Nej, helt enkelt inte. Trots allt var BMW 507 en fantastisk skapelse, en triumf f\u00f6r ingenj\u00f6rskonst och en bil som visade v\u00e4rlden att BMW \u00e4r ett f\u00f6retag som kan tillverka de mest fantastiska bilarna p\u00e5 planeten. Denna vackra roadster visade sig inte vara den r\u00e4ddare som BMW hoppades p\u00e5, men den har sedan dess blivit deras mest v\u00e4rdefulla klassiska bil. H\u00e4r \u00e4r dess historia.<\/p>\n<p>I dag \u00e4r BMW v\u00e4rldens st\u00f6rsta tillverkare av lyxbilar, men strax efter andra v\u00e4rldskriget existerade f\u00f6retaget knappt. De flesta av deras anl\u00e4ggningar bombades, en del av fabrikerna l\u00e5g i \u00d6sttyskland under sovjetisk kontroll och f\u00f6retaget hade sv\u00e5rt att anpassa sig till den nya efterkrigsverkligheten. BMW h\u00f6ll fast vid ett sortiment av f\u00f6rkrigsmodeller och f\u00f6rberedde sig l\u00e5ngsamt f\u00f6r att presentera de senaste modellerna i b\u00f6rjan av 50-talet, med siktet inst\u00e4llt p\u00e5 lyxmarknaden f\u00f6r att konkurrera med huvudkonkurrenten Mercedes.  <strong>Inf\u00f6randet av BMW 501, en lyxsedan med sex- och V8-motorer, var ett viktigt \u00f6gonblick i f\u00f6retagets historia<\/strong>. Ingen f\u00f6rv\u00e4ntade sig en s\u00e5 avancerad, v\u00e4ldesignad och kraftfull lyxsedan fr\u00e5n ett f\u00f6retag som k\u00e4mpade f\u00f6r att \u00f6verleva. Kunderna beh\u00f6vde f\u00e5 klarhet i vad BMW egentligen \u00e4r. Med Isetta t\u00e4ckte de den billigaste delen av marknaden, och med 501 var de bland de dyraste tyska bilarna p\u00e5 den tiden.  <strong>BMW ville desperat bli ett lyxm\u00e4rke och i mitten av 50-talet ins\u00e5g man att f\u00f6retaget beh\u00f6vde en &#8220;halo&#8221;-bil som skulle fungera som en &#8220;fallstudie&#8221; av BMW:s tekniska och designm\u00e4ssiga kompetens.<\/strong>  Huvudansvarig f\u00f6r att utforma detta projekt var den legendariske Max Hoffman, som d\u00e5 var BMW:s import\u00f6r i USA. Han \u00f6vertygade styrelsen om att det fanns en lucka p\u00e5 marknaden f\u00f6r sportiga roadsters som skulle passa BMW perfekt. Det var en imponerande och vacker roadster designad av Albrecht Von Goetz, som ocks\u00e5 designade BMW 503 (lyxig Gran Turismo).  Med <strong>en l\u00e5ng motorhuv, kort bakdel och en sportig siluett helt i aluminium var den en av de snyggaste bilarna fr\u00e5n den tiden, eller fr\u00e5n alla tider, beroende p\u00e5 vem du pratar med<\/strong>. Det handlade dock inte bara om utseendet, och 507 var den mest avancerade bilen f\u00f6r sin tid. F\u00f6r att spara pengar anv\u00e4nde BMW:s ingenj\u00f6rer s\u00e5 m\u00e5nga komponenter som m\u00f6jligt fr\u00e5n befintliga modeller, t.ex. chassi, fj\u00e4dring och drivlina. Motorn var handmonterad och levererade 150 hk, vilket var respektabelt.  <strong>V8:an liknade den i BMW 501-bilen, men den var trimmad f\u00f6r att f\u00e5 mer effekt och h\u00f6gre varvtal.<\/strong>  Kraften skickades till bakhjulen via en 4-v\u00e4xlad manuell v\u00e4xell\u00e5da, och \u00e4ven om BMW 507 var avsedd f\u00f6r amerikanska k\u00f6pare fanns ingen automatv\u00e4xel som alternativ. Med en totalvikt p\u00e5 bara 1,3 ton kunde BMW 507 n\u00e5 en hastighet p\u00e5 125 mph och sprinta till 60 mph p\u00e5 drygt 10 sekunder. I mitten av 50-talet var det imponerande siffror, och 507 var en respektabel prestation. De f\u00f6rsta f\u00f6rv\u00e4ntningarna var att omkring 2000 bilar skulle kunna s\u00e4ljas \u00e5rligen, med en maximal potentiell \u00e5rlig produktion p\u00e5 5000 fordon.  <strong>Hoffman t\u00e4nkte sig att BMW 507 skulle placeras ovanf\u00f6r billiga roadsters fr\u00e5n MG och Triumph och som en direkt konkurrent till Jaguar XK140 och Chevrolet Corvette, men under ultradyra bilar som Mercedes 300SL eller Ferrari 250<\/strong>. N\u00e4r de f\u00f6rsta exemplaren n\u00e5dde Hoffmans \u00e5terf\u00f6rs\u00e4ljare blev det dock en obehaglig \u00f6verraskning. Det f\u00f6rv\u00e4ntade detaljhandelspriset p\u00e5 5 000 dollar, som skulle g\u00f6ra 507 mycket konkurrenskraftig, uppn\u00e5ddes inte. Den handgjorda karakt\u00e4ren, den avancerade tekniken och materialen var mycket kostsamma, och efter ett och ett halvt \u00e5r steg priset till 10 500 dollar, vilket var \u00e4nnu sv\u00e5rare att r\u00e4ttf\u00e4rdiga. Bilen var fortfarande fantastisk, vacker och snabb, men bara ett f\u00e5tal hade r\u00e5d med den. Det tyska racingesset Hans Stuck och F1-m\u00e4staren John Surtees hade \u00e4gt sina bilar fr\u00e5n b\u00f6rjan. <strong>Men den mest popul\u00e4ra BMW 507 var ingen annan \u00e4n rockkungen, den legendariske Elvis Presley<\/strong>. Han \u00e4gde faktiskt tv\u00e5 fordon, det f\u00f6rsta k\u00f6ptes 1959 n\u00e4r han tj\u00e4nstgjorde i Tyskland. Intressant nog k\u00f6rde han inte n\u00e5gon av dem s\u00e4rskilt mycket eftersom han var ovillig att k\u00f6ra en manuell v\u00e4xell\u00e5da.
