Por todas as contas, o BMW 507 poderia ser considerado um fracasso, uma vez que n\u00e3o conseguiu fornecer a empresa de sucesso a que aspirava.<strong>  Vendido em n\u00fameros muito pequenos, quase n\u00e3o teve sucesso nas corridas e foi abandonado ap\u00f3s apenas alguns anos no mercado.<\/strong>  Ent\u00e3o, ser\u00e1 um fracasso? Simplesmente, n\u00e3o. Apesar de tudo, o BMW 507 foi uma cria\u00e7\u00e3o impressionante, o triunfo da engenharia e um carro que mostrou ao mundo que a BMW \u00e9 uma empresa capaz de produzir os carros mais espantosos do planeta. Este belo autom\u00f3vel n\u00e3o se revelou ser o salvador que a BMW esperava, mas tornou-se desde ent\u00e3o o seu carro cl\u00e1ssico mais valioso. Aqui est\u00e1 a sua hist\u00f3ria.<\/p>\n<p>Actualmente, a BMW \u00e9 o maior fabricante mundial de autom\u00f3veis de luxo, mas logo ap\u00f3s a Segunda Guerra Mundial, a empresa quase n\u00e3o existia. A maioria das suas instala\u00e7\u00f5es foram bombardeadas, algumas das f\u00e1bricas estavam na Alemanha Oriental sob controlo sovi\u00e9tico, e a empresa teve dificuldades em adaptar-se \u00e0 nova realidade do p\u00f3s-guerra. A BMW agarrou-se a uma linha de modelos anteriores \u00e0 guerra e preparava-se lentamente para apresentar os \u00faltimos desenhos no in\u00edcio dos anos 50, visando o mercado de luxo para competir com o seu principal rival, a Mercedes.  <strong>A introdu\u00e7\u00e3o do BMW 501, um sedan de luxo alimentado por motores de seis cilindros e V8, foi um momento bastante significativo na hist\u00f3ria da empresa<\/strong>. Ningu\u00e9m esperava um sedan de luxo t\u00e3o avan\u00e7ado, bem desenhado e poderoso de uma empresa que lutou para sobreviver. Os clientes precisavam de esclarecimento sobre o que a BMW realmente \u00e9. Com a Isetta, tinham a parte mais barata do mercado coberta, e com os 501, estavam entre os carros alem\u00e3es mais caros da \u00e9poca.  <strong>A BMW queria desesperadamente entrar numa marca de luxo, e em meados dos anos 50, perceberam que a empresa precisava de um carro &#8220;halo&#8221; que servisse como um &#8220;estudo de caso&#8221; da excel\u00eancia em engenharia e design da BMW.<\/strong>  O papel principal na concep\u00e7\u00e3o deste projecto foi o lend\u00e1rio Max Hoffman, ent\u00e3o importador americano da BMW. Ele convenceu a direc\u00e7\u00e3o de que havia uma lacuna no mercado de roadsters desportivos que se adequaria perfeitamente \u00e0 BMW. Foi um show-stopping e um lindo roadster desenhado por Albrecht Von Goetz, que concebeu o BMW 503 (luxuoso Gran Turismo).  <strong>Com cap\u00f4 longo, traseira curta e silhueta desportiva feita inteiramente de alum\u00ednio, era um dos carros mais vistos da \u00e9poca, ou todos os tempos, dependendo de com quem se falava<\/strong>. Contudo, n\u00e3o se tratava apenas da apar\u00eancia, e o 507 era o carro seriamente avan\u00e7ado para a sua era. A fim de poupar dinheiro, os engenheiros da BMW utilizaram o maior n\u00famero poss\u00edvel de componentes dos modelos existentes, tais como chassis, suspens\u00e3o, e unidade de trac\u00e7\u00e3o. O motor foi montado \u00e0 m\u00e3o e entregue a 150 cv, o que foi respeit\u00e1vel.  <strong>O V8 era semelhante ao da BMW 501 saloon, mas estava afinado para ter mais pot\u00eancia e rota\u00e7\u00f5es mais altas.<\/strong>  A pot\u00eancia foi enviada para as rodas traseiras com transmiss\u00e3o manual de 4 velocidades, e embora o BMW 507 se destinasse a compradores americanos, o autom\u00e1tico n\u00e3o era uma op\u00e7\u00e3o. Com um peso total de apenas 1,3 toneladas, o BMW 507 poderia ultrapassar as 125 mph e correr a 60 mph em pouco mais de 10 segundos. Em meados dos anos 50, esses eram n\u00fameros impressionantes, e 507 era um artista respeit\u00e1vel. As expectativas iniciais eram de que cerca de 2000 autom\u00f3veis pudessem ser vendidos anualmente, com uma produ\u00e7\u00e3o anual m\u00e1xima potencial de 5000 ve\u00edculos.  <strong>Hoffman previu que o BMW 507 seria posicionado acima dos roadsters baratos da MG e Triumph e como concorrente directo da Jaguar XK140 e Chevrolet Corvette, mas abaixo dos carros ultra baratos como o Mercedes 300SL ou o Ferrari 250<\/strong>. Contudo, quando os primeiros exemplos chegaram ao concession\u00e1rio Hoffman, houve uma surpresa desagrad\u00e1vel. O pre\u00e7o de retalho esperado de $5000, o que tornaria 507 muito competitivos, n\u00e3o foi atingido.
