Disain ja funktsioonid olid tol ajal ennekuulmatud ning BMW oli tellimustega \u00fcle ujutatud. Kuulduste kohaselt esitati n\u00e4ituse ajal \u00fcle 4000 tellimuse, kusjuures m\u00f5ned kliendid maksid isegi \u00fcle 20 000 Saksa marga, et p\u00e4\u00e4seda ootenimekirja. Ametlik tootmine algas 1989. aasta alguses, esimesed tarned toimusid hiljem samal aastal. Nimekirjahind oli \u00fcsna astronoomiline, 80 000 Saksa marka, mis oli kolm korda kallim kui tavaline 325i, millel Z1 p\u00f5hines.  <strong>Siiski oli Z1, mille aeg 0-100 km\/h oli 7,8 sekundit ja tippkiirus veidi \u00fcle 140 km\/h, \u00fcsna kiire ja d\u00fcnaamilisem kui 325i t\u00e4nu madalamale raskuskeskmele, veidi kallutatud mootorile, et tagada madal esiosa disain ja parem aerod\u00fcnaamika.<\/strong>.
