Kliendid vajasid selgitust selle kohta, mis on BMW tegelikult. Isettaga oli neil turu k\u00f5ige odavam osa kaetud ja 501-ga kuulusid nad ajastu k\u00f5ige kallimate Saksa autode hulka.  <strong>BMW soovis meeleheitlikult saada luksusbr\u00e4ndiks ja 50ndate keskpaigaks m\u00f5isteti, et ettev\u00f5te vajab &#8220;halo&#8221; autot, mis oleks BMW insener-tehnilise ja disainialase tipptaseme &#8220;juhtumiuuringuks&#8221;.<\/strong>  Peamine roll selle projekti kavandamisel oli legendaarsel Max Hoffmanil, kes oli tollal BMW USA importija. Mootor oli k\u00e4sitsi kokku pandud ja andis 150 hobuj\u00f5udu, mis oli arvestatav.  <strong>V8-mootor oli sarnane BMW 501 salongi omaga, kuid see oli h\u00e4\u00e4lestatud suurema v\u00f5imsuse ja k\u00f5rgema p\u00f6\u00f6rlemissageduse saavutamiseks.<\/strong>  V\u00f5imsus saadeti tagaratastele 4-k\u00e4igulise manuaalk\u00e4igukasti kaudu ja kuigi BMW 507 oli m\u00f5eldud Ameerika ostjatele, ei olnud automaatk\u00e4igukast valikuv\u00f5imalus.
