Ved at bruge sin Formel 1-erfaring besluttede han, at kulfiber ville v\u00e6re det bedste valg til chassis og karrosseri, hvilket g\u00f8r F1 til det f\u00f8rste produktionsk\u00f8ret\u00f8j med monocoque-chassis af kulfiber. I t\u00e6t samarbejde med den legendariske BMW-ingeni\u00f8r Paul Roche, lykkedes det McLaren at k\u00f8be en 6,1-liters S70\/2 V12-motor, en speciel og forbedret variant af den ber\u00f8mte BMW&#8217;s V12-enhed. Motoren var helt legeret med variabel ventiltiming (en nyhed i begyndelsen af 90&#8217;erne) og t\u00f8rsump-sm\u00f8ring i racerstil. S70\/2 blev naturligvis h\u00e5ndbygget af M Performance-divisionen og indeholdt adskillige unikke mekaniske anordninger som to injektorer pr. cylinder og en separat t\u00e6ndspole til hver cylinder, blandt andet. Resultatet var 618 hk og et drejningsmoment p\u00e5 479 lb-ft (650 Nm), som i begyndelsen af 90&#8217;erne var forbl\u00f8ffende tal. <strong>Den fedeste detalje ved motoren var dog, at motorrummet var d\u00e6kket af guldfolie!<\/strong> Guldet var ikke en luksusdetalje til at fange opm\u00e6rksomheden hos velhavende bilk\u00f8bere, men en n\u00f8dvendighed p\u00e5 grund af dets varmeisoleringsevne. Men selvom han fik den fulde frihed til at skabe den form, han \u00f8nskede, skal der v\u00e6re en sp\u00e6ndende funktion med \u2013 et us\u00e6dvanligt tre-s\u00e6det layout.
