Dette bilfirma opfandt praktisk talt den neoklassiske stil og skabte biler, der s\u00e5 antikke ud, men som var meget moderne og hurtige. Her er historien om Excalibur Phaeton, en unik maskine, der gav anledning til mange efterlignere.<\/p>\n<p>Historien om Excalibur kan ikke fort\u00e6lles uden at n\u00e6vne dens skaber &#8211; den ber\u00f8mte amerikanske bil- og industridesigner Brooks Stevens. Stevens var kendt for mange vellykkede bilkonstruktioner og var et kendt navn i bilindustrien i 50&#8217;erne, da han arbejdede for Studebaker, Jeep og senere Chrysler.  <strong>Han designede ogs\u00e5 tog og motorcykler og arbejdede som konsulent for mange virksomheder.<\/strong>  Som en talentfuld stylist har Stevens altid haft en svaghed for klassiske biler, og han etablerede endda sit eget bilmuseum \u00e5rtier f\u00f8r klassikermanien overtog bilverdenen. Han var is\u00e6r vild med formerne fra sin barndom og roste de europ\u00e6iske luksus- og racerbiler fra 20&#8217;erne og 30&#8217;erne. I slutningen af 50&#8217;erne fik han id\u00e9en om at bygge sit eget bilfirma, men at bruge de klassiske p\u00e5virkninger som grundlag for sine designs. F\u00f8r ham var der ingen, der havde t\u00e6nkt p\u00e5 at lave noget lignende, da f\u00f8rkrigsbiler blev betragtet som for\u00e6ldede og for\u00e6ldede p\u00e5 alle m\u00e5der, og k\u00f8berne var kun interesserede i moderne former, kromfinner og store motorer.<\/p>\n<p>P\u00e5 det tidspunkt arbejdede Stevens for Studebaker, et af de mest fremtr\u00e6dende navne i den amerikanske bilindustris tidlige dage. Da han blev bedt om at fremstille en konceptbil, der kunne skabe opm\u00e6rksomhed om den kriseramte Studebaker, overtalte han generaldirekt\u00f8ren til at give ham lov til at bruge Studebaker Lark-chassiset og den 290 hk st\u00e6rke V8-motor til sin egen kreation og vise den p\u00e5 Studebaker&#8217;s stand p\u00e5 Detroit Auto Show i 1963.  <strong>Resultatet blev Excalibur SS, den f\u00f8rste neoklassiske roadster, noget helt andet end hvad resten af branchen lavede.<\/strong>  Hans projekt fik straks stor interesse fra klassiske fans, der roste den innovative tilgang, opm\u00e6rksomheden p\u00e5 detaljer og den tidl\u00f8se form. Karrosseriet var lavet af plastik, men k\u00f8lergrillen, forruden, kofangerne og st\u00e5lhjulene var som om de stammede fra begyndelsen af 1920&#8217;erne. Stevens var fascineret af klassiske former og brugte Mercedes SSK som direkte inspiration og kopierede grundl\u00e6ggende dens linjer over Lark-rammen. Studebaker Lark-platformen blev bibeholdt og var tilg\u00e6ngelig, men i stedet for Studebaker V8 fik SS&#8217;en en ny Chevrolet 327 (5,3-liters) V8 fra Corvette med 300 hk. Selv om den havde et omfangsrigt chassis og en stor motor, var karrosseriet af let glasfiber, og hele bilen vejede kun lidt over et ton. Med 300 hk fra Chevy V8&#8217;eren, baghjulstr\u00e6k og 4-trins manuel betjening (senere kom der en automatisk betjening) kunne SS&#8217;en n\u00e5 60 mph p\u00e5 omkring 6 sekunder og toppe 130 mph. <strong>Den var f.eks. lige s\u00e5 hurtig som Corvette, hurtigere end Jaguar E-Type og bedre end den samtidige Porsche 911<\/strong>. Den viste sig at v\u00e6re meget popul\u00e6r blandt k\u00f8berne, da den havde mere plads indvendigt, bedre h\u00e5ndtering og mere komfort. <strong>I 1970 blev serie II-bilerne introduceret, og bortset fra nogle f\u00e5 mindre detaljer s\u00e5 Excalibur SS og Excalibur Phaeton n\u00e6sten ens ud<\/strong>. Den v\u00e6sentligste forskel er tilf\u00f8jelsen af en st\u00f8rre Chevrolet 350 V8-motor med lidt mere kraft og drejningsmoment. For at kunne klare det havde Serie II-bilerne dog standardskivebremser hele vejen rundt og en lidt l\u00e6ngere akselafstand. 70&#8217;erne blev betragtet som en m\u00f8rk tid for amerikanske pr\u00e6stationsmodeller, og i 1975 blev serie III-biler introduceret. De havde en enorm 454 V8 motor (7,4 liter), men med kun 225 hk p\u00e5 grund af de sk\u00e6rpede emissionsnormer. Disse biler flyttede langsomt over til luksusbiler og optr\u00e5dte anderledes. Eftersp\u00f8rgslen begyndte langsomt at aftage, og i 1980, da Serie IV-modellerne blev introduceret, var der kun f\u00e5 k\u00f8bere, der stadig \u00f8nskede en nyklassisk roadster. Virksomheden lukkede sine d\u00f8re i 1986, og det hjalp ikke, at Serie IV-modellerne havde en 5,0-liters V8 med kun 155 hk.  <strong>Men p\u00e5 trods af at Stevens indgav konkursbeg\u00e6ring i 1986, k\u00f8bte interesserede investorer rettighederne til navnet og v\u00e6rkt\u00f8jet og genstartede virksomheden i 1987.<\/strong>  Desv\u00e6rre var de i 1990 ude af samme sk\u00e6bne, da markedet for s\u00e5danne biler tydeligvis var forsvundet.
