At investere enorme summer i nye koncepter, teknologi og design, men at det ikke lykkes at s\u00e6lge dem i tilstr\u00e6kkeligt antal, hvilket skuffer aktion\u00e6rerne og s\u00e6tter virksomheden under \u00f8konomisk pres.  <strong>Vi kan alle forst\u00e5 denne bekymring, og det er derfor, vi l\u00e6gger m\u00e6rke til, n\u00e5r en konservativ virksomhed t\u00e6nker ud af boksen og introducerer noget innovativt, m\u00e6rkeligt og n\u00e6sten uansvarligt<\/strong>. Det var netop det, der skete i 1987, da BMW pr\u00e6senterede den unikke og utroligt interessante Z1 Roadster.<\/p>\n<p>For at forst\u00e5 BMW Z1 skal vi lidt l\u00e6ngere tilbage i historien for at forst\u00e5 den. I mods\u00e6tning til i dag var BMW i 70&#8217;erne og 80&#8217;erne et relativt lille firma med et unikt sortiment af pr\u00e6stationsorienterede modeller. P\u00e5 grund af den enorme succes med E30 3-serien havde virksomheden de \u00f8konomiske midler til at udvide og udforske nye designs, koncepter og teknologier. Derfor blev BMW Technik GmbH oprettet som et datterselskab. <strong>Det var grundl\u00e6ggende en afdeling for avancerede k\u00f8ret\u00f8jer med det ene form\u00e5l at skabe innovative designs, som kunne anvendes i masseproduktion<\/strong>. For at vise alle de sp\u00e6ndende ting, de har arbejdet p\u00e5, fik BMW Technik tilladelse til at konstruere en bil med et standardproduktionsdrev og -chassis, men med et unikt karrosseri, interi\u00f8r og funktioner. Til karrosseriet udviklede BMW Technik en s\u00e6rlig type plastkarrosseri, der var st\u00e6rkt og let, men alligevel elastisk nok til at blive skubbet tilbage, n\u00e5r det blev bulet.<\/strong>. Hele kroppen bestod af 16 stykker st\u00f8bt plast, som hurtigt kunne fjernes. BMW forestillede sig, at ejerne kunne udskifte karrosseripanelerne og \u00e6ndre bilens farve, hvis de \u00f8nskede det.<\/p>\n<p>Men p\u00e5 trods af at de aftagelige karrosseripaneler er meget interessante, var d\u00f8rdesignet en helt fantastisk funktion. I stedet for at bruge et standarddesign udviklede BMW en d\u00f8r, der gled ned til karmene, n\u00e5r der blev trykket p\u00e5 knappen. Designet og funktionerne var uh\u00f8rt p\u00e5 det tidspunkt, og BMW blev overv\u00e6ldet af ordrerne. Det rygtes, at der blev afgivet over 4000 ordrer i l\u00f8bet af udstillingen, og nogle kunder betalte endda over 20.000 DEM for at komme p\u00e5 venteliste. Den officielle produktion startede i begyndelsen af 1989, og de f\u00f8rste leverancer fandt sted senere samme \u00e5r. Listeprisen var temmelig astronomisk, 80.000 DEM, hvilket var tre gange s\u00e5 meget som prisen p\u00e5 den standard 325i, som Z1 var baseret p\u00e5.  <strong>Men med en tid fra 0 til 60 mph p\u00e5 7,8 sekunder og en topfart p\u00e5 lidt over 140 mph var Z1 ret hurtig og mere dynamisk end 325i p\u00e5 grund af dens lavere tyngdepunkt, den lidt skr\u00e5 motor for at give den lave front og bedre aerodynamik.<\/strong>. Det viste sig imidlertid, at BMW&#8217;s optimistiske l\u00f8fter om, at det var nemt at fjerne karrosseripanelerne, var st\u00e6rkt overdrevne. Firmaet lovede, at alle paneler kunne fjernes p\u00e5 mindre end en time, men det tog flere timer at f\u00e5 arbejdet udf\u00f8rt.
