BMW 507 kan efter alt at d\u00f8mme betragtes som en fiasko, da den ikke leverede den succes, som virksomheden \u00f8nskede.<strong>  Den blev solgt i et meget lille antal, havde n\u00e6sten ingen succes i racerl\u00f8b og blev opgivet efter kun et par \u00e5r p\u00e5 markedet.<\/strong>  Er det s\u00e5 en fiasko? Nej, ganske enkelt ikke. P\u00e5 trods af alt var BMW 507 en fantastisk konstruktion, en teknisk triumf og en bil, der viste verden, at BMW er et firma, der er i stand til at producere de mest fantastiske biler p\u00e5 planeten. Denne smukke roadster viste sig ikke at v\u00e6re den redningsmand, som BMW havde h\u00e5bet p\u00e5, men den er siden blevet den mest v\u00e6rdifulde klassiske bil. Her er dens historie.<\/p>\n<p>I dag er BMW verdens st\u00f8rste producent af luksusbiler, men lige efter 2. verdenskrig eksisterede virksomheden n\u00e6sten ikke. Ingen havde forventet en s\u00e5 avanceret, veldesignet og kraftfuld luksus-sedan fra et firma, der k\u00e6mpede for at overleve. Kunderne havde brug for en afklaring af, hvad BMW egentlig er. Med Isetta d\u00e6kkede de den billigste del af markedet, og med 501&#8217;eren var de blandt de dyreste tyske biler i den tid.  <strong>BMW \u00f8nskede desperat at blive et luksusm\u00e6rke, og i midten af 50&#8217;erne inds\u00e5 de, at virksomheden havde brug for en &#8220;halo&#8221;-bil, der kunne tjene som et &#8220;casestudie&#8221; af BMW&#8217;s ekspertise inden for teknik og design.<\/strong>  Den vigtigste rolle i udformningen af dette projekt var den legendariske Max Hoffman, som dengang var BMW&#8217;s amerikanske import\u00f8r. Han overbeviste bestyrelsen om, at der var et hul p\u00e5 markedet for sporty roadsters, som ville passe perfekt til BMW. Det var en imponerende og smuk roadster designet af Albrecht Von Goetz, som ogs\u00e5 designede BMW 503 (luksuri\u00f8s Gran Turismo).  <strong>Med en lang k\u00f8lerhjelm, kort bagende og en sporty silhuet helt i aluminium var den en af de flotteste biler i den tid, eller i alle tider, alt efter hvem du taler med<\/strong>. Det handlede dog ikke kun om udseendet, og 507 var den mest avancerede bil i sin tid. For at spare penge brugte BMW&#8217;s ingeni\u00f8rer s\u00e5 mange komponenter som muligt fra eksisterende modeller, f.eks. chassis, affjedring og drivlinje. Motoren var h\u00e5ndmonteret og leverede 150 hk, hvilket var respektabelt.  <strong>V8&#8217;eren lignede den i BMW 501 sedanen, men den var tunet til at have mere effekt og h\u00f8jere omdrejninger.<\/strong>  Kraften blev sendt til baghjulene via en 4-trins manuel gearkasse, og selv om BMW 507 var beregnet til amerikanske k\u00f8bere, var automatisk gear ikke en mulighed. Med en totalv\u00e6gt p\u00e5 kun 1,3 ton kunne BMW 507 n\u00e5 op p\u00e5 125 mph og sprinte til 60 mph p\u00e5 lidt over 10 sekunder. I midten af 50&#8217;erne var det imponerende tal, og 507 var en respektabel pr\u00e6station. De oprindelige forventninger var, at der kunne s\u00e6lges omkring 2000 biler om \u00e5ret med en maksimal potentiel \u00e5rlig produktion p\u00e5 5000 k\u00f8ret\u00f8jer.  <strong>Hoffman forestillede sig, at BMW 507 skulle placeres over de billige roadsters fra MG og Triumph og som en direkte konkurrent til Jaguar XK140 og Chevrolet Corvette, men under de ultra dyre biler som Mercedes 300SL eller Ferrari 250<\/strong>. Men da de f\u00f8rste eksemplarer n\u00e5ede Hoffmans forhandler, var der en ubehagelig overraskelse. Den forventede detailpris p\u00e5 5.000 USD, som ville g\u00f8re 507 meget konkurrencedygtig, blev ikke n\u00e5et. Den h\u00e5ndbyggede karakter, den avancerede teknologi og de avancerede materialer var meget dyre, og efter halvandet \u00e5r steg prisen til 10.500 dollars, hvilket var endnu sv\u00e6rere at retf\u00e6rdigg\u00f8re. Bilen var stadig fantastisk, smuk og hurtig, men kun f\u00e5 havde r\u00e5d til den. Produktionen varede kun tre \u00e5r, og i 1959 blev BMW 507 aflyst, efter at der kun var blevet bygget 242 biler i to serier med minimale forskelle.  <strong>BMW 507 viste sig at v\u00e6re en skuffelse for BMW med hensyn til salget, da virksomheden tabte penge p\u00e5 hvert eneste eksemplar, den fremstillede.<\/strong>  Det blev offentliggjort, at hele 507-eventyret tabte over 15 mio. Det tyske racerk\u00f8rer Hans Stuck og F1-mesteren John Surtees havde haft deres biler fra de var nye. <strong>Men den mest popul\u00e6re BMW 507 var ingen ringere end King of Rock, den legendariske Elvis Presley<\/strong>. Han ejede faktisk to biler, og den f\u00f8rste blev k\u00f8bt i 1959, mens han tjente i Tyskland. Interessant nok k\u00f8rte han ikke meget i nogen af dem, da han var utilb\u00f8jelig til at k\u00f8re med en manuel gearkasse.
